Just days after an official press release announcing the 2003 Mustang Cobra, SVT has unveiled another 2003 addition to its already potent stable of performance vehicles: the E-150 Econolightning. While SVT has not formally acknowledged many specific details, it is obvious that the SVT Econolightning is based on the successful Econoline van model that has served Ford well for many years. SVT has incorporated subtle cosmetic treatments like the color-matched bumpers and side skirts, and added distinctive 18" wheels borrowed from the 2001-2002 Lightning. This wolf-in-sheep's-clothing sits approximately three inches lower than a regular E-150, with aggressive side-pipes that let you know this is not your regular commercial van. No official horsepower or torque figures have been provided, but SVT has confirmed that the supercharged 5.4-liter Triton V8 from the Lightning will serve as the powerplant for this 6400-lbs monster. Minor improvements like Manley connecting rods and a real forged crank distinguish this motor from the Lightning's engine, which already generates 380 hp. 400+ hp is expected. SVT will not elaborate on the Econolightning's expected performance, but John Coletti, chief engineer for Ford SVT, claims that this van will be able to embarrass quite a few sports cars. Final pricing has not yet been determined, but inside sources suggest that this sleeper will probably retail for around $31,500 when it hits showroom floors this fall. Some have questioned the need for a high-performance utility van, but SVT insists that the crowded performance car market has room for a unique niche vehicle like the Econolightning. At least one thing is for sure, this pleasant little surprise won't have any direct competition from Diamler-Chrysler and GM anytime in the near future. More material will be available soon ![]() |
