For some people, the "Ultimate Driving Machine" is not quite enough. The Alpina B10 V8 was designed for those individuals who feel that the standard BMW 540i is just too tame. Alpina starts by massaging the factory 4.4-liter V8 to 4.6 liters and installing a new crankshaft, higher-compression Mahle pistons, and reprogramming the Motronic engine management system. The result is 347 horsepower that peaks 1900 RPM earlier, and staggering performance that comes at a relative bargain compared to an M5. With Alpina's famous Switch-Tronic 5-speed automatic transmission, this stately sedan rockets to 60 MPH in only 5.4 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in only 13.6 seconds at 105 MPH. Upgraded brakes and suspension components ensure that the B10 V8 also decelerates from its 174 MPH top speed with confidence and composure.

This car is an art of work, thank you Alpina. It has taken me 12 months to find my B10 ( Full Spec, Manufacturers Extended Waranty, which is essential),It was designed to be Red Lined at every gear change and to be raced at any given opportunity,I dissagree with Robs comments (10/10/2003)on the rear tyres being to large, due to( Rubbing ),when fully loaded,This I believe will be a suspension fault on his vehicl, which will be covered by the warranty ( if the vehicle has one ), I have approx 90 stone of body weight every week end doing 150mph (max 170mph +) thats 4 fat blokes, up & down the M6 and never had any tyre rubbing.

For: Fantastic balance of comfort and performance. Truly awesome performance with a ride that defies the handling abilities. Its easier to live with that an M5 with auto and supple ride. By far the best saloon car I've ever owned. Against: E39 Styling is a bit weak. Heavy on tyres and rear tyres slightly too large. (They rub which can cause excess wear when fully loaded.)
